Refering to the reading for this week, please respond to one of the prompts below:

1. Make a table with three columns:

1st column: Include at least 5 of the following areas: Global Warming; Regional Temperature Changes, Regional Precipitation Changes, Extreme Weather Events, Sea-level rise, Biodiversity and Ecosystems, Sea Ice and Ocean Temperatures, Ocean Acidity, Health, Livelihoods, Water Supply, Human Security, Economic Growth.

2nd column: What is a major trend (or a notable detail) with 1.5 degree change by 2100 (a sentence or phrase)

3rd column: What are major changes with greater than 1.5 degree (2 degree) change by 2100 (a sentence or phrase)

2. Choose 1 graphic from page 1 (Fig SPM.2), p 13 (Fig SPM.3a), or p 20 Fig (SPM.4). Study it and write a summary of what it is showing. (You can do it!)

3. From Section D of the report, what are some ways that the IPCC report links climate change mitigation, sustainable development, and poverty eradication? Notice that the report not only talks about tradeoffs (negative effects), but also includes “synergies” (positive effects) as part of “strong sustainability.” What is an example of a possible synergy?

4. Post a link to some media that you read or watched that relates to the readings. Write 1-2 paragraphs describing the what the clip or article is about and how you connect it to what you read.

5. Compose and answer your own prompt that matches the quality of questions and responses required from above. This option is for when you got something out of the reading that you want to write about, but that I did not ask about.

Part two.

 Adaptation to Climate Change

Read: https://unfccc.int/topics/adaptation-and-resilience/the-big-picture/what-do-adaptation-to-climate-change-and-climate-resilience-mean

Watch: https://unfccc.int/topics/resilience/resources/adaptation-committee-adaptation-forum-video-documentary-adapting-to-a-changing-climate (20 min)

1. What is one example of an adaptation strategy for climate change given in the video? Be specific –  What was the problem and how did the community adapt?

2. Identify a climate change impact on your community (East Bay, or SF Metro Area, or CA, or West Coast, or US – you choose) and a specific current adaptation strategy that is being explored or implemented. Do a web search if you do not know what your area’s adaptation strategies are. I am sure you can find something! (For example: https://sfplanning.org/resilience-and-sustainability)

3. Identify what part of the problem it addresses. For example, if the adaptation strategy to slower, wetter hurricanes is a new local hurricane evacuation protocol on the Florida Coast (Know Your Zone – https://www.floridadisaster.org/planprepare/disaster-preparedness-maps/), it is addressing the prevention of the loss of life.
