What am I required to do in this assignment?
Assignment 1 is a 1500 word essay that requires you to critically evaluate one of the main perspectives in globalisation studies.
Here you are required to carry out 3 key tasks.
A) Choose one perspective on globalization for example ‘globalist’ (in either of its optimist or pessimist variants), ‘inter-nationalist’ or ‘transformationalist’ and demonstrate your understanding about it in relation to a topic of your choice.
B) Choose an area or topic topic from one of the weekly lectures and demonstrate your understanding about it in relation to a perspective on globalization. I.e the globalisation of drugs, crime, migration, children, culture, health, poverty etc.
C) And or Examine an aspect of UK government policy that has impacted a social group within your chosen area of globalisation. I.e Political, Economic, Cultural or Social globalisation
D) Carry out a critical evaluation using three interrelated measures; empirical adequacy, internal coherence and comprehensiveness and apply them to your chosen theoretical perspective interpretation of your topic.

USE THE FOLLOWING ESSAY PLAN AS A GUIDE
Title - you set out the essay title as Critically evaluate (insert your chosen perspective I.e Optimistic) theoretical perspectives on ( insert topic/area of globalisation I.e Cultural) globalization using examples explored on the Unit
Introduction – You will include an introduction to your essay. The introduction paragraph contains the aims of the essay, the sequence of topics to be discussed and a signpost of the direction of your discussion.
Definition of Key Terms – a brief unpacking of the key terms/concepts to be used in the discussion
Background to the Topic – a paragraph on the topic/area you have chosen, why it is important and how it might link to your theoretical perspective. And or an aspect of UK government policy that has impacted a social group within your chosen area of globalisation.
The Theoretical Perspective – a paragraph summarising the one you have chosen and what it says about globalization
Critical evaluation – A discussion of your theoretical perspective’s interpretation of your topic and whether it is justified. You can draw on examples of how your topic is understood by your chosen theory and how that stands up to scrutiny.
Conclusion – a final paragraph where you summarise the results of your critical evaluation for your chosen theoretical perspective.
References – your list of a minimum of six - ten sources (see Recommended Reading section) to pass the assignment, which are in line with the Harvard Referencing Guidelines set out below in this handbook.

➢ Ensure that you are clear on your chosen theoretical perspective and area of globalisation.
➢ Ensure that your chosen topic/area includes examples
➢ Include all the required sections outlined in the ESSAY PLAN.
➢ Draw on a wide range of appropriate academic books and/or journal articles and avoid using non-academic sources to construct a critical argument that uses one of the Globalisation perspectives in relation to your chosen topic.
➢ Ensure that your referencing is accurate and consistent both in the text and in the reference list, according to the University Harvard referencing
guidelines.
➢ Include a full reference list at the end of your work.
➢ Make sure your written expression is clear.
➢ Thoroughly proofread and edit your work before submitting it. Your work will be double spaced and clearly structured.

The assignment links directly to key concepts and theories taught during lectures and seminars. During each session a different topic and or theory in relation to globalization will be presented and explored.
This will allow time for you to reflect upon the relevance of theory to your area and topic of interest in preparation for assignment 2
