Guidelines for written home & project assignments

Formal requirements for home & project assignments

The length of a written assignment is defined by the number of standard pages.

Maximum pages for a written assignment is 15 (A4) pages.

Assignments that fail to conform to this requirement may be rejected by the assessors. The student is therefore personally responsible for ensuring that the assignment does not exceed the standard page requirement.

A standard page is defined as:

      ·    2275 characters (including spaces).

      ·    At least 3 cm margin at top and bottom. At least 2 cm in each side.

      ·    Minimum 11 pitch

      ·    Times New Roman

·    1,5 spacing

Students should be aware that it is not just the body text that is taken into account when determining the length of the assignment. All written components that form part of the assessment are included. This includes the introduction, the scope and definition of the assignment problem, the methodology chapter and perspective.

Only the title page, table of contents, bibliography, references, footnotes, endnotes and appendices are not included in the standard page definition.

Title page information

The following information must be clearly presented on the title page of all assignments (roughly in the order they are listed below):

•     Assignment title and any sub-title

·    Code and name of the course

•     Name of the professor

•     Name of the student

•     Civil registration number/ student ID (international students should ask the ISUP Secretariat)

•     Submission date of assignment

•     " Course at CBS" followed by the year i.e. 2016-SocialMediaManagement

Moreover, you have to fill in and sign “Declaration of authorship” (Last page of this file) and place it as page

2 in the assignment.

Content and layout

In addition to the above requirements all assignments must contain a detailed list of contents, precise and comprehensive references as well as a bibliography. Furthermore, it is advisable to include a brief introduction presenting the assignment to the reader. Most assignments should also contain a formulation of the assignment problem (and possibly a description of the scope of the research), a methodology chapter as well as a conclusion.

Students should also always be aware of special requirements concerning the content of a specific assignment, specified either in the general curriculum or in any written guidelines issued to the student in preparation for the writing stage.

All assignments must be typed in Times New Roman with a line spacing of 1,5. Headings must be clear and graphically separate from the body text.

Top and bottom margins should be at least 3 cm, and the side margins should be at least 2 cm.

Pages should be numbered and the list of contents should clearly indicate where the different chapters begin.

Students should attempt to ensure that the graphic appearance of the assignment promotes easy readability. This includes dividing long paragraphs into smaller ones, each separated by a concentration space, and that the font used is easy to read.

Academic conduct and misconduct

CBS expects of all students that the work they submit is their own and that the work is based on proper academic conduct.

If a student uses work done by others or makes use of his/her own formerly assessed, published or annulled work, the source must be provided according to  the rules on acknowledgement set for the examination. Under all circumstances, it shall always be possible to assess the use and quotation of the source, and the author(s) must always be acknowledged with due academic recognition.

A proper acknowledgment could be stating the author’s name, the title of the work, the year of publishing,

and a reference to a page, section or chapter etc. either in the text or by using end- or footnotes.

Furthermore the work must be included in the list of references submitted with the student’s work.

Regardless of length, quotations must always be followed by information on the source in a format which clearly differs from the student’s own work (e.g. by using alignment and italics) and the quotation should be started and ended with quotation marks.

Not following these guidelines will be perceived unethical and constitutes academic misconduct, which could lead to expulsion from CBS, and failure of the course for visiting ISUP students. For students on exchange at CBS, the home university will be notified of such misconduct.

Academic misconduct  is  at  issue  when  a  student  by  forgery,  plagiarism,  suppression,  cooperation on written individual assignments or in similar ways mislead own performance and results.

The following examples illustrate academic misconduct (non-exhaustive list):

      ·    Claiming credit for the work of others without their consent and without acknowledgement

·    Use of others ideas or words without authorization and without observing the rules on proper

quotation and acknowledgement

·    Forgery, fabricating of data, or uninformed selection/discarding of data, documents or the like

Please note that Faculty at CBS uses the plagiarism control tool “Genuine text”.

Language

A student’s language skills will affect the evaluation, as vague and unclear language will tend to disguise the academic content and skills that are to be evaluated. Thus, it cannot quite be avoided that a badly formulated assignment with numerous language errors will appear less clear and convincing. Well- controlled language use and an awareness of linguistic devices are therefore influential factors in the grading of a written paper.
