Structure :

  1. You could have an opening paragraph explaining what you are going to do and why. You could then go on to briefly define any terms that you feel need clarifying before moving on to the main body of the essay. This could comprise of a series of paragraphs dealing with each of the main points in turn. Remember to write a concluding paragraph that returns to the question, and gives some overview of how your paragraphs have answered it. That should give you a simple essay structure where the beginning explains the problem, the middle answers it and the end reflects back on the answer, relating what you have said to the question with which you began.
Bear in mind that what we want to probe is your ability to extract arguments and see how well you can put those arguments in your own words. Try to construct a clear, vigorous argument around which to develop your essay. For example, do not reach any conclusion too easily and instead, give some clear strong weight to each of your arguments before coming to a final, well qualified conclusion.

Do remember to use your own words in an essay and do not be tempted to ‘cut and paste’ from source material. Choose any quotations carefully, they have a lot of work to do and a few quotations which are well used to illustrate different aspects of your argument make for a better essay.Normally, not more than 10% of your essay should be direct quotations.Your quotations should be accurate, clearly indicated and all sources of information should be correctly referenced and included in the list of references at the end of your essay. Never `lift' a sentence or draw from text without putting it in quotation marks. Please refer The Harvard Referencing information available on the module’s Blackboard site or ask for assistance if you are unsure. There are also a range of study guides in the library which contain useful information on referencing as well as essay writing generally. Failure to comply with the above could result in a plagiarism enquiry. You will be able to check drafts of your work on Turnitin and your tutors will explain this.

Finally remember this is an academic essay so avoid being too "chatty" or informal. Try and be objective and evaluative and remember to include a bibliography at the end listing the books, journals and source of your information you have used. Read the checklist and feedback form carefully to see what is required.
