Assignment

Imagine that you are a practising chiropractor and you are reading some of the latest research articles to help inform your growing evidence-based practice.  Is the research useful?  How do you decide that?  The answer is using your critical appraisal skills to assess the research in a systematic way.

The purpose of this assignment is to undertake a critical appraisal of a piece of published research and assess the value of its conclusions on routine clinical practice.  The research article will be provided.

You should write a reasonably comprehensive report on the feature of the research article under the various headings, as discussed in class (and outlined on the attached marking criteria).  To do this, you will need to:

  • Overview:  Read and understand the article as a piece of research, providing an outline description of the paper explaining the context and purpose..
  • Appraisal:  Using the appropriate resources, provide a critical appraisal of the study design factors and the analytical aspects employed in relation to the RQ, providing an evidenced opinion of the ethical nature, academic quality, reliability and validity of the research.
  • Interpretation/Outcomes:  Consider the discussion and provide an appraisal of the main findings of the paper in terms of validity, contextualisation and plausibility.
  • Summary:  Finally, summarise your findings and draw conclusions, considering the applicability of the research to routine clinical practice.

You may use other articles in the literature to support any decisions or comments that you make.  Marks are given for the presentation of the work itself, and most of these will be for your reference format………………so use appropriate Harvard format!

Please state the number of words you have used at the end of your assignment.
