Informative Speech Assignment - Oral Communications/Research/P_407A_FA21_WE

Major Speech Assignments

The World Bank has decided to approach assisting the least developed countries in a new way. Instead of spreading money out among all the countries for one year,  they have decided to take a large amount of money and lift up one country at a   me. You will research one of the least developed countries and present the information you learned about the country in your Informative speech.  Then in your Persuasive speech, you will put together a proposal to convince the World Bank that your country is the one for them to choose first.

Informative Speech

Choose one of the countries on the Least Developed Country List.  Only one country will be done by each student.

Research the country and the present the information about the country to us with an informative speech.  6-8 minutes with a PowerPoint of at least 5 slides.  You will provide a works cited page providing your sources.

The challenge with the speech is to create an angle and present your country in an interesting manner. You will decide how to cover the history, customs, and statistics--- good and bad of the country. You may present the country from any angle that you can relate to, health, business, education.

Your PowerPoint should enhance and support your speech, and you will need to practice with it!

This speech will be given from an outline on note cards. You should have 3-5 qualified sources. Pictures must also be sourced.

Persuasive Speech

In this speech, you will present persuasive arguments to the World Bank as to why your country should be their first choice. What would you suggest the money be used for?  How will your changes be effective?  You will present arguments that cover Ethos, Pathos and Logos.   With this speech, you will provide a written manuscript, but your speech should be delivered from an outline on note cards that follows the manuscript. Do not just cover the same information you used in your informative speech. This speech will also be 6-8 minutes.

The challenge with this speech is to present your country in a way that makes it distinct from all the other “poor” countries.  One thought to remember, if you give people fish, you feed them for one day, but if you teach them to fish, they’ll eat forever.

Countries are placed in LCD status based on the information below.    This information may help you in ideas for the persuasive speech .

Human Assets Index (HAI)

Rationale

The HAI is a measure of level of human capital

Low levels of human assets indicate major structural impediments to sustainable development

A lower HAI represents a lower development of human capital

Thresholds

Since 2015 the CDP uses absolute thresholds for the HAI to determine inclusion and graduation eligibility

The inclusion threshold has been set at 60

The graduation threshold has been set at 10 per cent above the inclusion threshold at 66

Composition

The HAI is composed of  six indicators grouped into a health and education subindex with each indicator carrying an equal weight of 1/6

Original values for each HAI indicator are converted into index numbers using a  max-min procedure

Economic and Environmental Vulnerability Index (EVI)

Rationale

The EVI is a measure of structural vulnerability to economic and environmental shocks High vulnerability indicates major structural impediments to sustainable development A higher EVI represents a higher economic vulnerability

Thresholds

Since 2015 the CDP uses absolute thresholds for the EVI to determine inclusion and graduation eligibility

The inclusion threshold has been set at 36

The graduation threshold has been set at 10 per cent below the inclusion threshold at 32

Composition

The EVI is composed of  eight indicators, grouped into an economic and environmental subindex with each indicator carrying an equal weight of 1/8

Original values for each EVI indicator are converted into index numbers using a  max-min procedure
