Persuasion is complex. In that complexity, it can be viewed and approached in many different ways. Ten different definitions of persuasion are below.

Instructions:

Write the number of the one that stands out to you and explain in one sentence why it speaks to you.

1. Persuasion is intended communication that affects how others think, feel and/or act toward some object, person, group, or idea.

2. It is symbolic and non-coercive. It creates, reinforces, or changes responses. It is transactional and it is ubiquitous.

3. Persuasion is the process of preparing and delivering verbal and nonverbal messages to autonomous individuals in order to alter or strengthen their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors.

4. Persuasion is an activity or process in which a communicator attempts to induce a change in the belief, attitude, or behavior of another person or group of persons through the transmission of a message in a context in which the persuadee has some degree of choice.

5. It is the shaping, changing, or reinforcing of receivers’ responses, including attitudes, emotions, intentions, and behaviors.

6. We define persuasion as a conscious symbolic act intended to form, modify, or strengthen the beliefs, opinions, values, attitudes and/or behaviors of another or ourselves.

7. Persuasion is the transactional process among two or more persons whereby the management of symbolic meaning reconstructs reality, resulting in a voluntary change in beliefs, attitudes, and/or behaviors.

8. Persuasion is the co-production of meaning that results when an individual or group of individuals uses language strategies and/or visual images to make audiences identify with that individual or group.

Assignment 10

Novel Essay Research

Find and annotate 5 sources that will help you with your essay about the novel The Road. The sources may include critical reviews of the novel, critical analysis of other texts that are on a similar theme or topic that you're analyzing in the novel, or key texts that help to explain or apply a literary theory (critical reading strategy) that you think will be useful.

Sources should be in-depth (aim for pieces around 2000 words each) and you must also show that you've read them with some type of annotations on each piece. You need work that provides more than a 500 word fluff piece. A good set of search terms to start with is "literature and criticism" and then add your particular novel, particular symbol, particular critical reading strategy, and so forth to your search string.

you upload photos, you don't necessarily need to photograph every page of what you read, but I need to be able to see what source each piece is from and be able to read representative samples of your notes on it.
