CULTURAL IMMERSION PAPER
Unit 1 AS2: Cultural Immersion Paper (Graded)
The purpose of this assignment is to provide an opportunity for students to briefly explore another individuals’ emic worldview. The expectation is that the student will gain a deeper understanding of the healthcare practices of an unfamiliar culture and begin to apply transcultural concepts into their nursing practice.
Select a cultural group other than your own. Briefly identify cultural experiences you might be ale to participate in within your geographical area (i.e. Restaurants, places of worship, shopping areas, celebrations/festivals, health care facilities, etc.). Identify resources that you might be able to use in completing this project (i.e., medical resources, books covering culturally driven health-care practices and beliefs, health care providers associated with that culture, etc.). Consult with your faculty for approval to proceed within the first two weeks of the semester; approval must be obtained by the 2nd week of the semester. The completed paper is to be submitted during Unit 7 (week 7). Note: there are no early submissions of the paper.
After obtaining approval from your faculty, identify and informant within that culture. This person must be willing and knowledgeable enough to speak about the cultural significance, historical background, and health care practices of the culture. Begin your literature review census data about that population. Begin to journal about your literature findings and your experience in this short immersion project. Journaling activities should continue through the entire project up to paper submission.
Unit 3 AS2: Cultural Immersion Paper (Graded)
Continue your literature review. All reference literature is to be scholarly and published within the last five (5) years. Create informant interview questions. Your faculty must approve these questions by the 4th Unit (week 4). Continue journaling regarding your literature findings and your experience in this short immersion project. Journaling activities should continue through the entire project up to paper submission.
Unit 4 AS2: Cultural Immersion Paper (Graded)
Continue your literature review. All reference literature is to be scholarly and published within the last five (5) years. Complete the cultural self-assessment cited in Andrews & Boyle (2016) on pages 36-38 in Transcultural concepts in nursing care (7th ed.) and document your feelings/findings/ideas/etc. in your journal. (I ATTACHED THIS IN A SEPARATE FILE) Visit places of worship, shopping areas, celebrations/festivals with your informant or go alone. Sample some of the cultural foods, eat in a restaurant, and visit a food market if possible. If you cannot experience these activities with your informant try to discuss aspects of these experiences with your informant. Begin to identify how these experiences are related to health/illness beliefs and practices. Continue to journal as you explore these experiences. The following weeks should focus on completing these experiences, completing the literature review, and continued journaling. Journaling activities should continue through the entire project up to paper submission.

If you have not already done so, visit places of worship, shopping areas, celebrations/festivals with your informant or go alone. Sample some of the cultural foods, eat in a restaurant, and visit a food market if possible. If you cannot experience these activities with your informant try to discuss aspects of these experiences with your informant. Begin to identify how these experiences are related to health/illness beliefs and practices. Continue to journal as you explore these experiences. Group your data into major categories or themes. Compile articles and associated journal postings to support your identified themes. The following weeks should focus on completing these experiences, completing the literature review, and continued journaling. Journaling activities should continue through the entire project up to paper submission.
Unit 6 AS1: Cultural Immersion Paper (Graded)
Your literature review should be completed. All reference literature is to be scholarly and published within the last five (5) years. Identify how these experiences are related to health/illness beliefs and practices. You should have completed grouping your data in major categories and/or themes. Include your articles and associated journal postings supporting your identified themes into your paper. This week should focus on compiling all your data and completing your paper. Identify how these experiences are related to health/illness beliefs and practices. The paper must be in APA formatting.

This week should focus on completing your paper and submitting it. The paper must be in APA formatting. The completed paper is to be submitted this week. Note: There are no early submissions of the paper.
