Title: Demonstration of skills required to minimise spread of infection

In a series of 4 Skills Demonstrations carried out in the workplace or in a simulated environment, candidates will be assessed in the following areas:

  1. Hand Washing procedures and application of Hand Gel – demonstration to tutor for assessment

  2. Donning & Doffing gloves – demonstration to tutor for assessment

  3. Correct Disposal Of Sharps – verbal assessment to tutor + WRITTEN EVIDENCE  ☐ please tick 

  4. Responding appropriately and following protocol in dealing with a sharps injury - verbal assessment to tutor + WRITTEN EVIDENCE  ☐ please tick


Learners must provide WRITTEN EVIDENCE for number 3 & 4 – 

if not submitted 50% of marks deducted for these skills


  • Evidence of effective planning and preparation for the tasks – 10 Marks

  • Evidence of implementation of correct health and safety protocols– 10 Marks

  • Implementation of correct procedures– 10 Marks

  • Correct Documentation/Reporting– 10 Marks

Prior to undertaking any activity delegated to the learner by the Registered nurse, the learner must explain and obtain agreement/consent from the individual where possible/relevant.  The activity must be discussed with the individual based on their individual needs. Health Care Assistant must orientate her/him self by reading the documentation related to the activity, manual handling documentation and any risks associated with the activity to gain knowledge to ensure safe practice.

Implementation of correct procedure of using hand soap and hand gel

  • Rub hands palm to palm

  • Rub right palm over back of left hand with interlaced fingers

  • Rub left palm over back of right hand with interlaced fingers

  • Rub palm to palm with interlaced fingers

  • Rub back of fingers to opposing palms with fingers interlaced

  • Rotational rubbing of left thumb clasped in right palm

  • Rotational rubbing of right thumb clasped in left palm

  • Rotational rubbing backwards and forwards with clasped fingers of right hand in left palm

  • Rotational rubbing backwards and forwards with clasped fingers of left hand in right palm

  • Rinse soap with water using correct technique

  • Wash hands for 20 seconds

  • Dry thoroughly from fingertips to wrist, with a single use towel only

  • Use correct technique with direction of fingers to elbow
