Overview

In the field of healthcare, data is a driving factor in the decisions staff make on a daily basis. Healthcare professionals use data for making informed decisions related to monitoring and improving the quality of patient care, for strategic decision making to ensure an organization is financially viable, and for strategic initiatives that ensure an organization is competitive in the healthcare landscape. To ensure that the decisions made are valid, it is essential that healthcare professionals have the skills to accurately gather, analyze, and interpret data. When gathering data, healthcare professionals must identify their data needs, use the appropriate research methods, and ensure that their research processes are in compliance with research administrative processes and policies. There are various ethical considerations that must be made throughout the research process to ensure that patients are protected and their safety maintained. As the professional conducting this research, it is your responsibility to ensure that you maintain a high level of ethical integrity and remain in compliance with the relevant regulations. Noncompliance may result in invalid conclusions, compromised patient safety, and a tainted reputation.

For the final project, you will assume the role of a quality manager employed at St. Mary Maternity Hospital. The board of trustees at the hospital has tasked you with developing a quality improvement report in which you will analyze the hospital’s low performance in its maternity services. In addition, the board of trustees is worried that this low performance may also be impacting the organization at an enterprise-wide level and has asked you to develop a plan to research the specific issue at this level. You will use the St. Mary Maternity Hospital case study and provided dataset to complete your tasks. Note that St. Mary Maternity Hospital is located in India. Health is not confined by geographic borders, and with technological advancements, health is becoming more and more global. For the purposes of this assignment, you will focus on the research administrative processes and policies located in the United States.

To begin your report, you will identify the issues occurring at the hospital and conduct research around the impact of these issues on the larger healthcare landscape. Next, analyze the data in the St. Mary Maternity Hospital case study, and the provided dataset to determine trends and patterns in the data. Use your findings to make recommendations to address the issues in the hospital. Finally, you will develop a research plan to determine the impact of the low performance on the enterprise. You will propose specific data-collection methodologies to gather qualitative and quantitative data, and justify how your research plan will comply with research administrative processes and policies.

The project is divided into three milestones, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final submissions. These milestones will be submitted in Modules Four, Six, and Seven. The final product will be submitted in Module Nine.

In this assignment, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following course outcomes:
ï‚· Draw connections between quality care issues and the healthcare landscape by analyzing healthcare research

ï‚· Determine trends and patterns in healthcare data by interpreting statistical calculations

ï‚· Propose data collection methodologies for gathering qualitative and quantitative healthcare data to address quality care issues

ï‚· Justify the compliance of healthcare research plans with research administrative processes and policies

ï‚· Propose data-informed quality improvement initiatives to address factors negatively impacting the quality of healthcare

Prompt

Imagine that you are a quality manager at St. Mary Maternity Hospital. In response to the hospital’s low performance ratings, you have been tasked with developing a quality improvement report. To complete the report, you will use the St. Mary Maternity Hospital case study and provided dataset. The board of trustees at the hospital has asked you to address two elements in your report. First, they have asked you to create data-informed recommendations to address the current issue of low performance at the hospital. To begin, you will frame the issues in terms of the larger healthcare landscape. Next, you will analyze the provided data using statistical calculations and a statistical software to determine the causes of low performance. Finally, you will recommend quality improvement initiatives to address the issues, supporting your recommendations with a visual representation of your data analysis. As the second element of your report, the board of trustees has asked you to develop a research plan to determine the impact of the issue of low performance on the organization at an enterprise-wide level. Your research plan must outline the data required to investigate the issue, the data-collection methodologies that will be used to gather the data, and a justification of how the research plan will comply with research administrative processes and policies.

Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:

Milestones Milestone One: Annotated Bibliography

In Module Four, you will submit an annotated bibliography. You will begin by identifying the issues of quality care occurring at the hospital in the St. Mary Maternity Hospital case study. Then, you will analyze healthcare research to gather more information on what the identified issues are and how they impact the healthcare landscape. This milestone will be graded with the Milestone One Rubric.

Milestone Two: Data Analysis and Quality Improvement Recommendations

In Module Six, you will use a statistical software to analyze patient data from the St. Mary Maternity Hospital case study and provided data set. You will then use your data analysis to develop quality improvement recommendations that address the issues of quality care you identified in Milestone One. This milestone will be graded with the Milestone Two Rubric.

Milestone Three: Enterprise-Wide Research Plan

In Module Seven, you will develop an enterprise-wide research plan to investigate the hospital’s quality care issues at an enterprise-wide level. In your plan, you will also explain how your proposed data-collection methodologies will be in compliance with research administrative processes and policies. This milestone will be graded with the Milestone Three Rubric.

Final Submission: Quality Improvement Report: Patient Care

In Module Nine, you will submit your final project. It should be a complete, polished artifact containing all of the critical elements of the final product. It should reflect the incorporation of feedback gained throughout the course. This submission will be graded with the Final Project Rubric.

Final Project Rubric
