The National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) represents EMS practitioners around the United States. On the NAEMT website, you can find the Code of Ethics for EMS Practitioners and the EMT Oath. The Code of Ethics was originally written in 1978 to serve as guidance for members of the EMS profession by a physician involved with the development of EMS systems in Georgia. It was adopted by the NAEMT in 1978 and revised in 2013. EMS is similar to other healthcare professions in that ethical decisions will have to be made, but those in EMS may have to be made more quickly than those in facilities or where there are more professionals involved. Some changes were made to the original Code of Ethics to reflect modern ethical issues and an increased focus on the patient with less on the provider. For this assignment, review the EMT Oath and EMT Code of Ethics. Compare and contrast these expectations with your understanding of modern ethical expectations of EMS/healthcare/public safety professionals. For instance, look at an up-to-date set of standard operating procedures for an agency to compare with the oath and code. Relate how ethical behaviors influence management of EMS organizations. Your assignment should contain no less than two points of comparison and two points of contrast. Your paper must be at least two pages in length and include at least two outside sources, one of which may be your textbook. Adhere to APA Style when creating citations and references for this assignment. APA formatting, however, is not necessary.
