It’s really important that you follow all the guideline here.
What is the review of article ROA? ▪You will write a review of a scholarly article, focusing on its limitations. ▪You will form your own opinions about its validity and value ▪Use eight references to support your viewpoints ▪Provide evidence for positions ▪Provide background information
Starting the ROA ▪Select an article about a subject related to your practicum site (and thus Public Health). ▪Fill out the Article Analysis Matrix and write an outline of the article.
Selecting an article ▪Select an article that is related to the kind of work your practicum site does. ▪The article must be…: ❑Related to work done at your site ❑Published in the last 10 years ❑An original study ▪Not a secondary analysis of someone’s else’s survey data or research study. ❑Based on data its authors collected. ❑Have a clear study design.
Please remember! ❑Related to work done at your site ❑Published in the last 10 years ❑An original study ▪Not a secondary analysis of someone’s else’s survey data or research study. ❑Based on data its authors collected. ❑has a clear study design. ▪As in: You understand it .❑ NO META-ANALYSES! ❑NO REVIEWS!
For Your Outline ▪You will write a one-to-two page (not shorter than one, not longer than two), single-spaced outline of the paper that selected for the article review assignment ▪Be as specific as possible ▪Format outlines with the Harvard Outline Format. I. Main Idea (e.g., Introduction) A.Sub Idea (e.g., Importance of Research)1.Sub idea of A (e.g., Addresses Health Disparities) a.Sub idea of i(e.g., Gay, lesbian, bisexual mental health disparities include……) b.Sub idea of i(e.g., Married vs. unmarried mental health disparities include……) B.Sub Idea (e.g., Hypotheses) II.Main Idea (e.g., Methodology)
What to Include in Your Outline :
Purpose: ▪Why is the research important? ▪What is already known about the topic? ▪What are the hypotheses? ▪What are the objectives of the study?
Methodology: ▪What materials (tests, surveys, etc.) were used? ▪Who were the subjects of the study? ▪What was the design of the research? ▪What procedure(s) did they follow (i.e., How did they conduct the study?)? ▪What statistical analyses were used? Hint: The outline should follow the article’s structure, which should include these topics.
Results: ▪What are the most significant results? ▪What are the supporting results?
Conclusion: ▪What are the major findings of the study? ▪What is the significance/implication of the results?
AGAIN: The outline should follow the article’s structure, which should include these topics.
Article Analysis Matrix:
1.Describe the topic of the article.
2.Describe why you chose the article and how it relates to your site.
3.Describe the goals of the article: what were the researchers hoping to accomplish with this research?
4.What are the research questions and/or hypotheses being investigated in the study?
5.What kinds of studies (i.e., from what disciplines, on what topics) do the authors include in the background/introduction/lit review section of the article?
6.How was the original study conducted? In other words, what types of methods were used? Be specific.
7.Describe the sample (subjects, cases, cohorts, etc.) used in the research article. Discuss how the sample was selected, randomized, and which population it was drawn from.
8.Were human subjects used? ▪Did the authors collect identifying info about the subjects? ▪If human subjects were used, did the authors discuss any ethical issues? If yes, please discuss the ethical issues.
9.Describe any limitations of the study described in the research article.
10.Describe the results of the research article.
11.Describe the take-away points of the article: Why does the study matter?
12.Keywords: List the keywords that best describe the research article.
My Practicum site is a Herbarium Digitization Course:
The Practicum description is you will learn about the scientific use of herbarium specimens—dried, press plants stored in herbaria—and you will directly contribute to the “digitization” of these specimens. This will involve transcribing data from images of herbarium specimen labels and “georeferencing” (determining the latitude and longitude of specimen collection locations from textual locality descriptions).
So my site is a research about specimens
The project involves georeferencing collections of plants in herbaria that contributes to a large phenology study determining how climate change has altered phenology in native and non-native plants (changes in flowering time and other characteristics)
Choosing an Article:
- Choose on a topic related to the kind of work your practicum site does.
- Be published in the last 10 years
- Be an original study, not a secondary analysis is of someone’s else’s data.
- Be based on data its authors collected.
- Have a clear study design.
- It still has to be related to the work your site does.
- Outline of the research paper you are reviewing.
- Must be in Harvard outline format.
- At least 1 page, no more than 2 pages
Article Abstract Worksheet
- Answer all questions.
- Around 2 to 3 pages, single-spaced.
The outline of the article should be a page long and in the Harvard Outline format. A short or vague outline will lose points. An outline in the wrong format will lose points.
Every question on the worksheet should be answered; for each not answered, a point will be deducted. If all questions are answered completely, the assignment will be 2 to 3 pages long.
Types of Research Study Designs: ▪Qualitative▪Quantitative▪Cross-sectional▪Longitudinal▪Cohort▪Case-control▪Case series ▪Intervention ▪Natural or quasi experiment ▪Clinical ▪Survey or questionnaire ▪Interview ▪Ecologic ▪Observational ▪Existing data
