Analyzing Climate Change Measures
Climate change is a topic of interest in the current society. The debate on the matter has taken the center of American society among all the major stakeholders. Stakes on the debate on what approach is the best both in the international and in the United States are high. Discussions on the matter from the experts, politicians, and lobby groups have made it clear that climate change needs to be curbed through all possible measures to salvage the globe from the effects of carbon emissions and attain sustainability in all sectors.
In the 2019 article, "Will the World Act before Catastrophic Warming Occurs?" the author, Christina. L. Lyons argues that climate change is happening faster than anticipated in the earlier 2015 Paris accord. The accord was attended by the scientists in that field of study and that there is a need to intervene before it is too late (Lyons, p. 1). Christina backs up her assertion by citing the statements issued by the experts in climate change. Experts say that the changes are occurring so fast than the predictions and that the rate of carbon emission and in the atmosphere is so fast posing a risk to the world. An increase in temperature, the other significant impact on climate change, leads to a rise in the central water bodies' water levels. Despite having agreed with nations on the reduction of carbon emission in the Paris accord, scientists convened argue that climate change is occurring so fast. The writer brings out the impact of climate change on the entire world (Lyons, p. 2). Aquatic life in the oceans is endangered as the salinity of the water is reduced. Poor communities living at the coastal cities in their millions risk displacement, leading to rising poverty levels if not well checked; she quotes Phil Alston, UN special rapporteur on poverty eradication.
Christina has prepared the article with a specific intention to examine the danger posed by climate change and the measures that the United States is making to curb the danger. She also ventures into the analysis of the politics surrounding the matter in terms of policy formulation and the divergent opinions taken by the senior political leaders and the stakeholders in the industries related to climate change. Small oil and gas companies embraced the idea, but the major global organizations rejected the proposal (Lyons, p. 4). She cites the evidence given by the scientists that are the indicators that climate change is occurring quite fast. From the deforestation in the Amazon, rising temperatures that lead to the glacier's melting are among the significant issues raised by the experts. The rise in temperatures is also attributed to be the reason behind the massive fire outbreaks that destroy the forests and emit gases in the atmosphere. The international community has made an effort to propose to fund the Brazilian government on the reforestation of the Amazon that has suffered heavily on the fire breakouts. She brings out the efforts made by the United States of America more so the stances given by President Donald Trump and that of the Democrats (Lyons, p. 4). The writer gives special attention to the details that the politicians and the stakeholders in the industry from the lobby groups, motor and oil refinery industries, and even the judiciary make all in the aim of making a sober discussion whether the United States of America will be in a position to counter the effects of climate change before it is too late to be salvaged.
Christina's arguments arouse the matter that is of great significance to the current society. It is a current affair that needs a sober discussion to act as fast as possible. Her clarity on the gravity of the matter is not just commendable but also timely. An in-depth look into her article reveals that the political forces are throwing their stamina and influence trying to outdo each other whose plan is better in fighting climate change (Lyons, p. 5). Despite her insistence on climate change challenges, she fails to set an exact way forward in dealing with the matter she fails to come out with clarity. Her focus is just on the opinions thrown about the matter and the debate's failures so far. She fails to give a clear guideline on the best way forward for the United States of America. Her argument dwells heavily on the activism perspective of the matter, where she appears to hail those who are demonstrating against the leaders who are soft on the matter.
Christina is successful in bringing out the Trump administration's laxity to come up with a clear policy guideline for the climate change debate. The writer's reasoning and presentation of the president's actions point out that he is doing the process in the most extended way. “It is something the President has made worse,” she quotes Nick Gourevitch. She illustrates how the president ignored the propositions by a group of state governors who wanted consideration of fuel efficiency standards (Lyons, p. 6). Her approach gives us the hint the current administration of the United need to improve in dealing with the matter.
This article by Christina will be helpful in my research on climate change. My research now has a new insight into what occurs in policy formulation and the impact of politics on global issues such as climate change. The article is impactful in raising the scientist's views on the matter. It also gives light that different groups of scientists may have different approaches to a given issue. That is explained by the fact that as other scientists on climate change is making recommendations; others are in total vehemence disputing the same with claims that the information issued is misleading. Another significant impact that I gather from the article is that there is a need for the public to be fully aware of what is going on in their world. The majority will end up being the victims of the decisions made by the leaders in most matters (Lyons, p. 5). Christina's article is also great in the research process in that it gives me the inspiration to look into the varied aspirations of the stakeholders in the climate change debate. When she says that the small organizations agree with the proposed recommendations while the major ones are not, it shows that firms' interests supersede the world's goodwill. The salient message is that the big corporations are interested in long-term profits and no interest in what the future holds.
In conclusion, the debate on climate change needs to be continued and given special attention. Policy formulation by the leadership should consider the input of the stakeholders. It is essential to keep off the politics of both the Republicans and the Democrats in the United States of America to address the grave matter with sobriety. The effects of climate change are severe, and action is not negotiable. The international community should also adopt the best practices in curbing climate change, bearing in mind that future generations depend on the choices made in the present. There are various interests of the people in the industries that are dealing with the matter and they are supposed to be open and address the matter without minding their profit goals. Climate change will need the unity of focus from every corner to control the negative impacts that endanger the world and its posterity.
