7-1 Worksheet: Training Compliance Programs and Measures

1.      What is the ethical dilemma in this scenario?

In this scenario, an ethical dilemma lies in deciding the patient to whom to donate the kidney. There is an ethical dilemma as to whether to donate it to the first patient who has been on the waiting list for years or the second patient whose family has regularly donated large amounts of funds to the organization that have been used to help others. The first patient is close to death, and their condition may not improve even after receiving the kidney; however, a failure to donate it to them and instead donate it to the second patient may raise ethical concerns as it may be viewed as a reward to the patient’s family that has regularly contributed to the organization whenever the organization helps one of their own at the expense of the patient who has been at the top of the waiting list for years.

2.      What type of ethical training program would you suggest to avoid this issue again? Justify your response.

In this scenario, I would suggest ethical conduct training. According to Watts (2021), ethical conduct training aims to improve ethical decision-making. It entails identifying and implementing the right set of ethical solutions as part of the decision-making process. Ethical conduct training helps an organization’s employees ‘know good’ and ‘do good’ during their practice. Therefore, ethical conduct training will help improve the moral consciousness of the organization’s employees by raising their moral sensitivities and awareness. This will allow them to uphold the highest ethical standards, ensuring they make ethical decisions throughout their practice.
