Blackboard Submission: Log in to Blackboard and choose your INFT 5983 link. Then choose “Course Content” -> “Week 5 (9/16 – 9/22)” -> “Homework 4”, and attach your document by clicking “Browse My Computer”, choosing your document, clicking “Open”, and clicking “Submit”. Please do not copy and paste your answers into Blackboard. In Blackboard, assignments are set up where you can make multiple submission attempts, as long as it is before the deadline. However, only the last submission attempt will be graded. I will not open previous submission attempts. It is important that your last submission attempt contain all the required files. If your assignment requires submitting more than one file, all of these files should be in one message, the last submission attempt.

Problems

Journal (10 points)
  • Keep a journal on what you have observed, thought, learned, and/or experienced this week. It helps you collect your thoughts and ideas and allows me to see what you are thinking.
  • Write one page (limit your page to 350-400 words) on what you have observed, thought, learned, and/or experienced in Week 5; do not submit a journal from previous weeks. Your journal must be related to this week’s topics/material.
  • If any websites and videos are posted in this week’s folder, discuss your thoughts on the websites and videos. Clearly identify your discussion in the following order; start a paragraph by writing Websites: followed by your thoughts on the websites. Start a next paragraph by writing Videos: followed by your thoughts on the videos.
  • Use paragraphs in your journal.
  • Do not combine your journal with your exercise answers on one page; the journal should be on its own page.
  • If you wish to cite a reference, do not let it be the focus of your discussions. Provide your own thoughts and analysis; critical thinking is evaluated and scientific reasoning is assumed.
Exercise 1. (60 points) Take a look at all the class information that posted since the beginning of the semester. Whether he communicated with you in person, over the phone, via e-mail, or over social media (feel free to also look at any information about him online), use DISC (D: Direct / Dominant I: Influencing S: Supporter / Steady C: Conscientious / Compliant) categories to figure out the target’s (Dr. Wahsheh) communication style, your (student) medium for delivery, and your (student) goal for the communication. Would you say that Dr. Wahsheh is more task-focused or people-focused? Is his style direct or indirect? Even if you cannot pinpoint him a 100%, you can get close. If you wanted to influence Dr. Wahsheh, you need to figure out how he communicates in the medium in which you are trying to influence him. Remember that just because you profile Dr. Wahsheh, make the right assessment, and craft a message that will entertain him in his communication happy zone does not mean that you will always have a 100% success. If by now you have profiled Dr. Wahsheh, how do you then use this information to your benefit (to answer this, you first need to understand a little bit about how to communicate within each style whether you are in a position of authority or not; revisit the textbook for more information). If you could not tell whether Dr. Wahsheh is task-oriented or people-oriented, but you know whether he is direct or indirect, you can still effectively communicate with him as a direct person, even if he is also in the conscientious or supporter category. Write one page (limit your two pages to 350-400 words) to answer the question (1) about profiling your instructor Dr. Wahsheh. When providing an answer to the question, you are to use the following format (in this order): a. Would you say that Dr. Wahsheh style is more task-focused or people-focused? What led you to say that? Task-focused or people-focused? What led you to say that? b. Would you say that Dr. Wahsheh style is more direct or indirect? What led you to say that? Direct or indirect? What led you to say that? c. Use DISC (D: Direct / Dominant I: Influencing S: Supporter / Steady C: Conscientious / Compliant) categories to determine Dr. Wahsheh’s communication style. His communication style (D, I, S, and/or C): d. What is your medium for delivery? e. What is your goal for the communication? f. After having profiled Dr. Wahsheh, based on your assessment of yourself, think about your own style and decide what you would need to change to influence Dr. Wahsheh? 2. (30 points) The textbook author Christopher Hadnagy told a story on Pages 79-80 about two people who wanted his signature on his first book. Describe a similar story that may have happened with you, a family member, a friend, or a co-worker. Describe the story and the problem that happened. What should you have done to avoid that problem? Use DISC to help you be a good influencer. Write one page (limit your two pages to 350-400 words) to answer the question (2) about the similar story. When providing an answer to the question, you are to use the following format (in this order): a. What is the story? b. What was the problem that happened? c. With whom did the story happen (you, a family member, a friend, or a co-worker)? d. What should you have done to avoid that problem? Use DISC to help you be a good influencer.
