Solved: Nursing Issue Scenario

Amihan works with a group of teen mothers. The group members have a Facebook group to provide support to each other, share parenting tips including how to manage parenting challenges. Amihan is invited to join the group. On scanning the posts she becomes concerned when she reads how one mother is feeling. She writes a comment in response, “I know it is difficult. Are you still taking your medication?”

One of the other teen mothers stopped by the clinic office to pick up some supplies. She said to Amihan, “I thought you could not take anything when you are breastfeeding.”

Learners are asked to respond to the Issue – Nursing Scenario provided below and submit a two-page response to the following questions:

• Identify one (1) professional practice concern raised in this social media / technology issue.

• What two (2) risks does this issue raise for a professional nurse?

• What best practices would you put into place to minimize the risks of this situation in the future?

• Use one (1) relevant nursing document from the College of Nurses (CNO), Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO), Canadian Nurses Association (CNA), Ontario Nurses’ Association or other credible nursing association to support your answer. Scholarly journal articles may also be used.

Assignment 2 Due February 12, 2021

  • Using the definitions of leadership, management, and followership, imagine you are faced with a critically ill client whose family members are spread throughout the country. Some family members are holding vigil at the bedside, whereas others are calling the unit incessantly, taking nurses away from the client care responsibilities. You recognize the family concerns and want to move from a reactive stance to a proactive position. How would you engage in solving this problem in a leader role? A manager role? A follower role? In which role would you be most comfortable? Least comfortable? Which role would lead to the best outcomes for the situation?
  • How can you best integrate chronic disease related personal self management skills with lifestyle and other aspects of a client’s life?
  • Discuss what is meant by, “Client education is essential to safe, ethical clinical practice.”
  • What specific strategies would you use to help low-literacy clients learn essential health information?
  • Describe a time when you felt truly “empowered” as a nurse. What factors contributed to this feeling of empowerment?
  • Describe a time when you did not feel “empowered” as a nurse. What factors contributed to this feeling of disempowerment or helplessness?
  • What would you do for and/or with a client that was empowering for the client?
  • How do you introduce yourself to clients and family members? Are you contributing to a powerful professional identity for nursing?

Assignment 3 Due: February 12, 2021

Individual Action Plan

This is an individual assignment, not a team assignment.

For clarification: the CNO Action Plan replaces the CNO Learning Plan – some documents on the CNO Website will use ‘Learning Plan’ and ‘Action Plan’ interchangeably.

Significance of the Action Plan Assignment

As a nurse in Ontario you must reflect on your practice and complete an Action Plan, every year. This is a requisite of your professional quality assurance obligation. A yearly Action Plan is a requirement for annual registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Purpose

The Purpose of the Action Plan Assignment is to examine:

  • your previous nursing education and learning experiences, and relate them to your future nursing, in Ontario
  • the roles of self-reflection, and a nursing Action Plan, for quality assurance

Outcomes

The Action Plan Assignment Outcomes are to:

  • Define self-reflection
  • Explain the purpose of practice reflection in the CNO Quality Assurance program
  • Apply the sections of the CNO Action Plan to your personal learning goals
  • Review your Learning Needs with a peer
  • Create SMART Action Plan learning goals
  • Align your goals with CNO standards/guidelines
  • Determine reasonable timelines to achieving Action Plan goals
  • Analyse the relationship between achieving Action Plan goals and practice competencies
  • Evaluate SMART learning goals

Assignment

You will create a CNO Action Plan following the CNO expectations for evidence of annual Quality Assurance, incorporating only two (2) SMART learning goals related to nursing skills, knowledge and/or application that you believe will contribute to your nursing abilities in Canada.

  1. Use the following titles, in this order, to complete your Action Plan:
    1. Learning needs

Create a statement that identifies the reasoning for pursuing both your nursing-related goals, with 2-3 learning needs for each goal. Make sure these two goals relate to each other in some way – identify the relationship between the 2 goals.

  1. Learning Goal #1

Create your first SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-based) goal that you believe will contribute to your nursing success in Canada.

  1. Goal #1 Activities and timeframes

Be specific and detailed. Include 5-10 step-by-step actions that will keep you on track and provide a timeline which will lead to you achieving the goal.

Include all references, names of articles, videos, journals, course/workshop names, etc., after each of the activities they apply to, only – be very specific with this information, provide title, dates, location; etc., so that someone reading it would be able to find it easily.

  1. Learning Goal #2

Create your first SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-based) goal that you believe will contribute to your nursing success in Canada.

  1. Goal #2 Activities and timeframe

  1. How do my learning goals support my commitment to continuing competency?

State how your learning relates to the competencies of nursing practice.

  1. Evaluation of changes/outcomes to my practice

Note: How willyou know that you have reached your goals? You will not have completed your goals at this point, but you should have some way of measuring whether you have achieved your expectations.

For example: “I will know I have reached my goal when I have collaborated with the unit team to develop the Culturally Sensitive Care resource binder and it is available for staff use as a resource, by February 10th”.

Another example: “I will successfully complete the workshop on Indigenous Cultural Sensitivity provided by my workplace, by March 16th”.

Or: “I developed and delivered a presentation highlighting culturally sensitive care, specific to the Jewish population of the long-term care home, and co-presented this with a colleague, to the staff, by July 8th”.

For a non-nursing example: if your goal is “To safely, and accurately, cross the street to buy groceries for a party, by November 22nd” you will evaluate this as follows: “I will know I have achieved my goal when I can independently travel across the street without being injured, or losing my way, to the grocery store at (give address) by November 22nd.”
