HIST 3387 02: World War II

Spring 2021

Paper #2 Assignment

Due Date:  Friday 26 March 2021 @ 5pm on Blackboard.

What does war teach?  At what cost?

What did the Second World War teach its participants, and how?

Task: Select a belligerent state and analyze a specific episode of learning or innovation during the conflict and consider how it changed future behavior.

A successful paper will argue for an answer to the above questions by drawing on clear reasoning, lectures, and readings.  Reading or research from outside the syllabus is not required and not recommended.  Any material used in the paper must be cited—footnoted—according to the Chicago Manual of Style.  (http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html)

Students must consider the arguments of at least two assigned authors (Hastings, Presseisen, van Creveld, the Swanstons, etc.) in formulating their responses.

Every paper should have a clearly defined thesis or “claim” stating what the student intends to argue in the paper.  This statement should be underlined in the text of the paper.

Students must submit 2 of 3 assigned papers in HIST 3387 02.  Each submitted paper is worth 20% of the overall course grade. Those who want extra credit can have a draft of their papers reviewed at the Writing Center, information here: https://www.shsu.edu/centers/academic-success-center/writing/index.html.

Specifics:  All papers should be 3-4pp. long, submitted with standard, 1” margins, double-spaced with Times New Roman 12pt. font in a Microsoft Word document.  All papers must have a heading with the student name and a title.  Quotation of sources must be clearly indicated, and no more than ½ page of the paper can be composed of quotations.  No images or illustrations; no need for separate title pages.

Papers that contain plagiarized material or that do not represent the work of the student submitting them will automatically receive a failing grade and cannot be resubmitted.
