PUBH: Children, Obesity and COVID-19

Childhood obesity is a serious problem in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 20% of school age children (6-19 years) are obese in the U.S. For this assignment, you will learn more about the obesity epidemic in the U.S. and problems facing children and parents. Hispanic (25.8%) and non-Hispanic blacks (22.0%) had higher obesity prevalence than non-Hispanic whites (14.1%).

Watch ‘Children obesity: Science and Solutions’ video by the Harvard School of Public Health and answer the questions below. The video is 60 minutes. You may want to take notes on information that can support your paper. I suggest turning on the closed captions reading the prompt before watching the video.


Reflect on the information from the video, along with at least 3 additional sources (besides the CDC website) to support your response. Limit this assignment to no more than five pages (cover page-1 page, content-3 pages, reference-1 page). All assignments should be written in current APA Formatting and Style.

1.       Describe and reflect on at least 2 contributor mentioned in the video.

2.       How might political, cultural, family and community factors may alleviate or worsen the barriers?

3.       How did the pandemic impact contributors to obesity risks? How can industry, policy-makers, healthcare providers and educators help parents overcome these contributors? Give two examples and offer at least one recommendation.

4.       Which contributor to obesity risk do you think is most important for parents to address and/or overcome in the time of the pandemic? Why? Make sure you support your stance.
