ENGL 2111 (Butcher) – Hamlet Paper
Assignment
Throughout the semester, we have come across several social and political topics. These topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
-social stratification (hierarchical system) -domestic relations -gender/sex constructions
-class constructions -religious constructions -power structures
-humanity -individualism -storytelling/entertainment
For this essay, choose one of these topics and compare Hamlet to one other text we’ve read this semester. You should show how both texts offer similar depictions of the topic you choose, and how each text can help us better understand the other through these comparisons.
You should not use any outside source; just stick to Hamlet and the other primary text that you use. You also should have a works cited page and use parenthetical citations to cite textual evidence used.
REQUIREMENTS
-MLA format
-MLA in-text citation documentation and works cited page
-3 FULL double-spaced pages: Times New Roman, 12 pt font

Outline Help
1. Introduction (no longer than ½ to ¾ of a page.
A. Give some background information about both texts (be brief)
B. Introduce the topic
C. Thesis (the thesis should simply state that you will be comparing the texts to illustrate
commonalities dealing with the topic)
2. Body Paragraphs (repeat this for however many body paragraphs you have)
A. Topic sentence that mentions one aspect of the topic you will be talking about
B. Examples/Explanation of how the topic is seen in the texts
C. Quote from one text (and citation)
D. Explanation of quote
E. Quote from second text (and citation)
F. Explanation of quote
G. Connect the explanations back to your thesis
3. Conclusion
A. Compare the topic to current times
B. Comment on how we might learn from these texts to learn about today
