Child Development | Summarizing

Child Dev

Below are some Grade 8 content standards on “Force” from the California Department of Education.

·         Unbalanced forces cause changes in velocity. As a basis for understanding this concept:

·         Students know a force has both direction and magnitude.

·         Students know when the forces on an object are balanced, the motion of the object does not change.

·         Students know that when the forces on an object are unbalanced, the object will change its velocity (that is, it will speed up, slow down, or change direction).

·         Students know the greater the mass of an object, the more force is needed to achieve the same rate of change in motion.

According to the text, one important aspect of promoting development in science is to provide age appropriate explanations for physical and biological phenomenon. As explanations are provided, students should be able to connect the information to meaningful and larger bodies of information. Moreover, it is common and helpful to use visuals such as diagrams and flowcharts. Students should also be asked to summarize or organize what they have learned.

The following three videos are from YouTube that review Newton’s 3 laws of motion. Review these videos in the order presented. Treat these three items as one learning module on the topic and do the following.

1.       In your online text assignment, assess how well they covered the aforementioned concepts on force (i.e., content standards).

2.       Indicate how well these videos as a learning unit incorporated the aforementioned information in the text (i.e., provide age appropriate explanations, connected the information to meaningful and larger bodies of information, used visuals).

3.       NOTE that with the third interactive activity you have to click the laws across the top to begin the activities. There are 3 tabs for each of Newton’s laws.

In completing this online text assignment be sure to do the following. Use numbers (i.e., 1 and 2) in addressing the two issues above. For number 2, also use letters (i.e., a-c) to address the three issues – a (age appropriate explanations), b – connecting information to meaningful and larger bodies of information such as explaining how a concept connects to something in their daily lives), and c – (use of visuals).
