Simulation Laboratory Report

PSI 159, SUMMER 2021

Simulation Laboratory Completion (5%) &

Simulation Laboratory Report (20%)

DUE DATE: Turnitin copy electronically submitted on Week/Unit 10, (Friday July 9th, & July 23rd, 2021) AT 1600 HOURS. In order for it to be graded, the report must be submitted to http://turnitin.com/

SAVE and/or PRINT the digital submission receipt.

Turnitin information for the class can be found on the course website. Ensure you submit to the correct section otherwise late penalties may apply.

INSTRUCTION FOR COMPLETION: The student will be assigned a security services role and be given access to an individual scenario for them to complete within the available time frame completion dates. This scenario will be generated from the Conflict Resolution Simulator. The student will participate in this simulation virtually through the BlackBoard PSI-159 Course Website. It will require the student to participate, evaluate and react to a situation that is presented to them. This will be done by clicking on verbal and use of force options. This scenario and interaction, once completed will be used to generate an after-action or critical incident report. At the end of the available completion dates, the instructor will receive a list of all students who completed the simulation and those students will automatically receive 5% of their final grade. A demonstration and live question and answer session with the simulation team and instructor will be scheduled.

INSTURCTION FOR REPORT: The student will write a brief formal report discussing the situation which was presented in the simulation, their actions or inactions, their reasoning behind such and any pertinent Use of Force legislation or guidelines. Please note that the student MUST CITE THE TEXTBOOK, Fundamentals of Security (Chapters 9, 10, & 11 may be the most relevant), but may find additional material valuable (such as chapters from the textbook not covered in this course, like chapter 8, or the Criminal Code of Canada).  Do not use the PowerPoints, students that do so will lose marks. At the end of simulation the student will be provided with all the relevant ‘tombstone’ information (time of sim, ballistics etc.).

Questions to answer may include (but are not limited to):

What organization did I belong to and how did this influence my actions/inactions? (Clock face)

What happened during the situation that I am reporting on? Description of subjects and vehicles?

Where did the situation I am reporting on take place?

What did I observe about the subject(s) and their behaviour and communication? (Chapter 9)

What do I remember about my own behaviour and communication? (Chapter 9)

What part of the CACP framework was used or not used? (Chapter 11)

What part of the CACP framework could have been used or not used?  (Chapter 11)

PLEASE NOTE: The student is not being evaluated on their performance during the scenario only on their ability to discuss their performance using the appropriate academic terminology and material. Please ensure accuracy in your report as the instructor does receive an official report from the Simulation Laboratory describing the student’s interaction and the simulation.

FORMAT: The assignment should be a 0800-1000 word (TOTAL-INLCUDING REFERENCES) formal report, double-spaced, size-12 font, Times New Roman black. The assignment may not be over the word count! If it is, marks will be taken off. You require a title page with your name, word count, and instructor name, course code and section number. If you do not have one or any of these, marks may be taken off. You also require a reference page which shows your sources (Textbook and any additional material) utilizing APA. APA will also be used for all in-text citations. Please see the marking rubric for specifics. This is a formal report so please only use academic terminology.

AVAILABILITY DATES for SUMMER 2021:

Between Week 6: June 6–Week 9: July 2

Completion of the actual simulation should take less than 15 minutes. The Simulation itself MUST be completed within the availability dates and on its own is worth 5% of the final grade. After the availability date the simulations will no longer be available.

LATENESS:  Humber College has a policy that late assignments are deducted (5%) per day late and a grade of “0” if late more than 7 days including weekends. (See Humber student guide for full information).  Only bona fide medical reasons with proper documentation will be considered by the professor to accommodate lateness.

SIM LAB Notes

Scenario:

Address: 981 Plymouth Blvd.

Current Date: July 8, 2021 (THURSDAY)

Time: 12:46:52 PM

I am an OPP officer who just pulled over a vehicle for erratic driving. The driver was speeding, cutting off several vehicles, and took his time pulling over when my lights and sirens were activated.

  1. Old man wearing dark jeans and an orange shirt steps out the vehicle with a firearm drawn to his head, he shouts in a loud voice “I’ve had it, this is the third time this month I’ve been pulled over, do you think you can stop me whenever you want to huh?”

The driver seems distressed, I’ve chosen to draw my weapon, with the firearm pointed at him and told him “Let’s just take a deep breath and talk about this. I only pulled you over because you were driving erratically”.

  • The suspects keep the firearm pointed at his head and says, “Im not putting it down, shoot me I’m tired of this”.

I had the options to tell him drop the weapon and tell him that I would shoot if he doesn’t drop the weapon, however I chose to tell him “I understand that you’re angry, but you don’t have to do this. Can we just talk?” The suspect really seems distressed and was trying to deescalate the situation as much as possible without having to use lethal force.

  • He then proceeds to say in a loud manner: “Im not putting it down pig!... shoot me !”.

My options in this part were to either say im not bluffing, I will shoot you if I must, I might just do that if you don’t drop it. But I chose to continue with the current plan and see if I can get him to calm down. I told him “It doesn’t have to get to that. Nobody has to get hurt here”.

  • Suspect still holds the gun but doesn’t drop it. He’s holding it with his right arm down to his side. He seems to be very angry and fed up. Suspect is looking dangerous right now.

I had the choice to tell him to put the gun to the ground. I chose to tell him instead “You haven’t dropped the gun yet. Don’t make me use force!”. My firearm is still always pointed at him.

  • Finally, the suspect shouted how about now? Then rose his gun to his right, his 3 oclock , in my point of view, 9 oclock and took 3 shots. I then proceeded to fire a shot at him because he could have possibly injured people and myself. I couldn’t shoot earlier because I wasn’t expecting that response. I shot at him after he fired his third round.
