URSP250 Individual Assignment 3

Background: We have learned about a variety of sustainability related problems and practices already this semester.  Examples of sustainability problems include social inequality in sustainability, burning of fossil fuels, overconsumption of energy and water, global warming, pollution and waste production, unsustainable infrastructure, and the increased frequency and intensity of environmental hazards, among others. Examples of sustainable practices and potential solutions include water and energy conservation, recycling, waste management, generation of renewable energy, development of green infrastructure, green building design, mixed-use development, use of alternative transportation methods, and the fair distribution of these things across communities.

In this take-home individual assignment (#3) you will get a chance to identify examples of these problems and practices here in the DMV area and put together a photo essay that demonstrates these concepts for someone unfamiliar with them.

The Task: Your assignment will be to explore parts of the DMV where you live, work or hang out and take pictures.

By October 23rd at 9:30 am you need to turn an individual photo essay digitally on ELMS in .pdf or .doc format.  The photo essay should include a title, a brief introductory paragraph, a brief conclusion and 10 photos from the DMV area, with each image demonstrating the different sustainability problems or practices of your choosing. Each photo must have a brief caption (100 words or less) that identifies the location of the photograph, points out what the observer should notice, the sustainability concept it illustrates and why it is important.

Final thoughts: For this exercise, think of your audience as being a friend or family member that is not familiar with sustainability planning, but is interested in learning more about what you are encountering in URSP 250. It might help to think of it as a photo blog – perhaps you will want to come up with a common theme or a couple of contrasting themes that tie the photographs together. Have fun, be creative, and bring sustainability planning alive for your audience!

The assignment will be graded as follows:

•   20 points total:

o .5 point per photo

o .5 point per photo caption

o 4 points for introduction

o 4 points for conclusion

o 2 points for title
